Modular design — stems can be rearranged
These simple sculptures were inspired by my Filipino heritage. When I was young and living in New Jersey, my parents had a set of handcrafted wooden flower arrangements that are a popular Filipino interior design object. As a kid, I would play with the wooden flowers and its modular design by creating a variety of compositions with the flower stems.
When my partner and I built our house in 2022, my parents gifted us their wooden flower set and it is very special for me to see it every day in my own home (pictured below in my studio). Since I began working work acrylic plastic, I have made a colorful abstract version of this idea to pay homage to my heritage as well as create a new Filipino-American fusion of this design. I am excited to create these small sculptures for clients in a variety of dimensions and colors. I invite each client to arrange the composition as a meditative exercise in the same way I had played as a kid.
